Earlier this month the Leipzig Book Fair was host to the organizing committee for Brazil’s participation as guest of honor program at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair and announced the 70 authors that will attend the event in October. The National Library Foundation said that it focused on balancing literary diversity and plurality, established writers and the younger generation, a variety of genres (prose, poetry, essays, biography, literary criticism, children’s literature and technical and scientific works) as well as aesthetic quality. They also favored authors that have been published or are about to be published abroad.

Although “diversity” is the primary focus of Brazil’s participation, the “List,” as it has come to be known, has been criticized primarily for including a majority writers from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states: out of the 70 authors, only 19 are not from the Southeast region of the country, and mostly from big publishers. Galeno Amorim, president of the National Library Foundation informed the newspaper Folhathat the committee will be taking suggestion of other authors that publishers are willing to take to Frankfurt.
