January 2013 Bestseller Lists: Where’s the Brazilian Fiction?

The sole fiction title by a Brazilian author on the bestseller list...

It is said that in Brazil the year only starts after Carnival, so in February we can expect the race for the leader of the pack of Brazilian publishers to really get started. At present, Sextante, who usually has a three- or four-title lead over its competitors on the bestseller list is practically tied with Intrínseca and Ediouro. Plus, a new business publisher, Clio, made it into the Top 10 last month.

In the title ranking, not much changed in January. On the Brazilian authors list, just one book is fiction, Diálogos impossíveis by Luis Fernando Veríssimo. But this is not so unusual for the Brazilian authors list: just last month an article published by newspaper Folha analyzed PublishNews’ rankings to understand the absence of fiction titles by Brazilian authors. “The market has grown, but it’s more concentrated. Few titles manage to sell a lot. In this scenario, it’s difficult to compete with an international blockbuster,” Otávio Marques da Costa, publisher at Companhia das Letras, told journalist Marco Rodrigo Almeida. “Meanwhile, in nonfiction, international titles don’t have much strength here. The pubic prefers topics closer to them, about our history. It’s easier then to get on the bestseller list.” he added. The article also pointed out that Brazilian fiction authors are not usually as inclined to write popular or commercial fiction as nonfiction writers.

In the foreign authors ranking, six out of the 10 top sellers are erotic novels, which appear alonside by J.K. Rowling, William Young and the diet doctor of the hour, Pierre Dukan. William Young’s Cross Roads boosted his former book, The Shack, back onto the list, and movie adaptations helped boost The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Hobbit and Life of Pi into the top 20. PublishNews’ foreign authors bestseller list also inspired a piece by Folha reporter Cassiano Elek Machado, about the 70-year anniversary of the The Little Prince, a perennial bestseller.
