Bookstore chain Livrarias Curitiba is not only celebrating its 50th anniversary, but also record sales and expansion. In 2012 the company registered its best year ever: total retail book sales in 2012 reached 5.2 million copies, 19.9% more than in 2011. Including, if you include purchases by wholesalers, the increase was 22%. But the sector that most expanded was computer and technology goods, which grew 52%.
In a statement, the group mentioned bestsellers that helped boost book sales last year, especially E.L. James’ Fifty Shades trilogy, which sold 80,000 copies, and Edir Macedo’s biography, which sold 25,000 copies.
For 2013, Livrarias Curitiba expects to reach 5.7 million copies sold. Moreover, the retailer that has 21 stores concentrated in the southern region of the country, will expand in the state of São Paulo, with the opening of a megastore in Sorocaba in September — an investment worth over US$ 2.5 million.
