May 2011 Bestsellers

Saga Brasileira

A brief look at the Brazilian bestselling list for May 2011 will reveal that very little has changed from the previous month. The bestselling title in the country is still Ágape, by Marcelo Rossi, published by Globo Livros. Mr. Rossi is a famous priest in Brazil who owns his celebrity status to his contestable singing abilities and to the constant coverage he gets from the Brazilian radio and TV. His book has sold over 2.5 million copies since its launch last September -– an amazing performance for the Brazilian market.

Two other titles by Brazilian authors deserve some consideration, both published by Record. A riqueza do mundo is bringing Lya Luft back to the bestselling charts. Mrs. Luft has been a very successful author in Brazil, in both fiction and non-fiction. Her main bestseller was Perdas e Ganhos, a collection of memoirs and short essays published in 2003. She is represented by the Riff Agency.

The second book is A Saga Brasileira, written by the journalist Miriam Leitão. It is the number one bestselling business book in Brazil at the moment and brings an economic historical overview of Brazil, from hyperinflation to stabilization, describing the failures and successes of all the economic plans that were implemented by different governments. It is actually a perfect way to understand the economic challenges the Brazilian society has faced during the last years and decades.
